Holy-Wood / 'Tell-A-Vision' (Word-Magic)

Maxwell reads the film capital's name as the Druid magician's wand, hidden in the word itself.

The surface

Three words structure the mass media landscape: “Hollywood,” the place-name of the global film industry; “television,” the device delivering moving images into the home; and “programming,” the neutral-sounding word for what broadcasters transmit. A fourth — “channel” — names the stream those programs travel through. These are treated as accidents of geography and engineering history. The word “wand,” meanwhile, denotes the conductor’s baton and the stage magician’s instrument of effect.

The decode

Jordan Maxwell teaches that Hollywood means the holy wood of the Druid magician’s wand — holly being the sacred tree from which Celtic Druids traditionally cut the implement of their craft. In Maxwell’s reading this is not a coincidence of geography: “Magic wands were always made out of the wood of a holy tree… Hollywood, thus, is the druid establishment, and the symbols, the words, the stories, are designed.” The film industry sits, etymologically, in the forest of sacred tools. Michael Tsarion extends the decode to the screen itself: television is “tell-a-vision” — the deliberate casting of a vision into the minds of a mass audience. And programming, Tsarion notes, is precisely what it says: the act of installing a program into the minds of receivers who believe themselves passive viewers. “The fact that ‘programs’ are called ‘programs’ is fascinating in itself,” he writes. In this reading the entertainment industry names itself, in plain language, as a system of enchantment.

The symbol lineage

The etymological method here is the tradition’s own instrument. Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is documented in Celtic and Druidic lore as a sacred tree, associated with the winter sun and carried as a protective plant; the Druid priest as keeper of sacred wood and spoken formula is the root figure behind both the conductor (baton as wand) and the stage magician. The wand — rod of command, rod of effect — traces through the caduceus of Hermes/Mercury (twin-serpent staff of the messenger and trickster), through the royal scepter, and into the magician’s pointing instrument. Maxwell and Tsarion read the entertainment industry’s vocabulary as an open record of what it does: it plants images, it runs programs, it opens channels, it casts from the wood of a holy tree.
