The Great Seal & the Unfinished Pyramid

The watching eye, the unfinished work, and a new order of the ages — folded into the money in your pocket.

The surface

On the reverse of the one-dollar bill stands a pyramid of thirteen courses, left unfinished at the top. Its base carries the Roman numerals MDCCLXXVI — 1776. Above the truncated summit floats a triangle wreathed in rays, and inside it, a single open eye. Two mottoes frame the scene: Annuit Cœptis above, Novus Ordo Seclorum below. The design was finalized for the Great Seal in 1782 and placed on the dollar in 1935.

The decode

Manly P. Hall reads the seal as “the signature of the Mysteries” — the emblem, set openly on the national currency, of an initiatic tradition guiding the new republic. In his reading the unfinished pyramid is a Mason’s trestleboard: the Great Work still in progress, the structure deliberately left open at the top. The radiant eye is the eye of the illumined order — the few who see, set above the many. And Novus Ordo Seclorum, “a new order of the ages,” names the long objective Hall argues the founders encoded into the seal itself: “Careful analysis of the seal discloses a mass of occult and Masonic symbols.”

The symbol lineage

Each part of the seal is a Dictionary symbol with a documented descent. The all-seeing eye enters Western art as the Renaissance Eye of Providence — God’s omniscience drawn as an eye in a rayed triangle — and is folded onto the seal in 1782. The unfinished pyramid, thirteen courses for the thirteen states, carries the older language of the monument left deliberately incomplete. The eagle of the seal’s obverse, Hall notes, is a conventionalized phoenix — the solar bird of rebirth descended from the Egyptian Bennu of Heliopolis. Even the mottoes are inherited: Annuit Cœptis and Novus Ordo Seclorum both adapt lines of Virgil. Trace each element back and the seal resolves into a lineage of inherited symbols, assembled into one mark and printed a billion times over.
